Stuck on Intermediate Level?

Updated: Mar 26

Making that step from Intermediate to Advanced is difficult.

Do you feel like you’re not making the progress that you once were?

Do you feel that you’ve been at the same level for a long time now and have just stalled?

These things are normal when learning a new language. At the beginning it’s easy to make a big step forward, you’re always learning new words, expression and tenses but then one day it feels like you just hit a wall. Nothing new, just the same expressions again and again in a loop. Even on the app that you’re using, it’s the same things and you know there;s more out there. Well what can you do to get over this hurdle?

First thing is to challenge yourself more. Notice some of the vocab in this text (hurdle, stall etc), don’t just read the same things that you always do. If you normally read the news in English on one site, try another not only for a different perspective but it also will be written differently, you’re bound to see new expressions.

Another thing is to dive deeper into a subject. Let’s say you like games, check out the reviews of them in English. Or if it’s Cryptocurrency that floats your boat, you’re going to find a plethora of material to dive deeper, videos on YouTube to market analysis to Reddit threads. You’re lucky because the internet is English friendly for almost every topic you can imagine. According to Wikipedia, 60% of the internet is in English.

In one of my first years teaching English I had a student who was as close to a native speaker as I have ever had (Hi Diego!). He was a top lawyer in a multinational and had worked in the European Parliament so used English daily. One day I asked him, “Diego, clearly your English is great, why do we have these classes?” His answer has always stuck with me, he said, “Because I know if I stop using it and without your corrections then I’ll forget some phrases, I need to be pushed to stay motivated!”

Sometimes we all need that extra push to help us improve and that’s why we’re here at Arrow Languages to assist you. Maybe you feel competent in the language but know that you still have some difficulties or are unsure of this or that. Well let us push you in the right direction.
